DVB sets to work on standard for linear TV over broadband

DVB has set new terms of reference for the new DVB CM-I group for DVB-I (internet) and will look into the commercial requirements for standalone linear TV services over broadband internet.

CM-I’s will initially address commercial and technical requirements for a linear TV channel that can be discovered and consumed over the open internet and by regular TV equipment and user interfaces. The group is looking to provide services similar to DVB-S/C/T or IPTV but over IP-based delivery infrastructures and without any perceptible differences to the end user.

“With hybrid services, OTT and online distribution growing in importance, DVB is applying its expertise and know-how in this all-important domain. DVB-I will complement the current DVB standards that form the basis of the way consumers watch TV today,” said DVB Chairman Peter MacAvock in a statement.

The new meeting ground for video programming distributors!

At The Pay TV Show, taking place May 14-16 in Denver, we'll look at the innovative technologies, strategies, and business models that cable, telecom, tech, and media companies are using to compete in what has become a very disrupted marketplace.

The group is to be chaired by Thomas Stockhammer, technical standards director of Qualcomm Technologies, and vice-chaired by Peter Lanigan of TP Vision.

“DVB-I is expected to provide Internet TV enablers for the highest-quality DVB TV experiences across different consumption devices, from traditional big-screen TVs to nontraditional devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops,” said Stockhammer in a statement. “We envisage harmonizing Internet TV experiences with consistent specifications and hence, provide long-term confidence to consumers and the ecosystem. It feels now is the right time and DVB is in the right place—join us in our efforts.”

DVB is coordinating with other groups including HbbTV and 3GPP to create a horizontal framework for TV services that addresses the evolving viewing and consumption habits. DVB-I will eventually look at additional use cases, commercial requirements, and technical specifications and, in the long term, the CM-I group will develop internet-based distribution of TV services beyond the initial traditional use cases.
